Weekend Festivities

So as you may have noticed I haven't updated for the WHOLE weekend. I would say that I was off on some crazy awesome spectacular adventures, but that would be a lie. To be honest, I waited until today, because this weekend we explored our island a little bit more. We went to Fira (a lot), Pyrghos, Akrotiri, and Imerovigli. We got to take some busses and some taxis along the way.

Since the busses all lead to Fira, we spent much time in Fira. This time included shopping, eating, taking random pictures, going to fish spas, and sometimes just waiting at the bus stop. Fira is also where the cruise ships come in, so it is a really big spot for tourism.

We also went hiking around other cities ("walking" would be an understatement, since nothing seems to be on level ground here). The hills are great workouts and we never feel guilty about eating a whole serving of pasta, after consuming about 5 pieces of bread. We also had rain this weekend. It happened while we were in Fira getting lunch. In about 10 minutes dark clouds rolled in, so we moved to the inside of the restaurant. Five minutes after we got into shelter it started to rain sideways, so that was cool I guess. After the rain (which only lasted about maybe 30 minutes) you could see so far into the distance on the ocean.

Pyrghos is more of a traditional city. There aren't many shops and the roads are all mazes. To be honest, we kind of dipped out of Pyrghos right before the sunset. We did this for two reasons. One, we weren't familiar with all the twists and turns of the paths (it is CRAZY confusing). And Two, this paths were not lit. So we didn't want to risk tripping down steps that we couldn't see and navigating with pathways without light. However, when we were there during the daylight hours it was beautiful. I saw a house that was essentially a mini farm. There was goats and chickens. Pretty much everything you need here. I also got some awesome pictures there (my opinion of course).

Today we went to Red Beach. Named because of the red lava rock (which I actually knew what it was thanks to rocks accents at my house while growing up - go Mom and Dad) that towers about 50-100 feet behind you. You actually have to hike to get to the beach, not a big deal really. It just kind of sucked because we were all wearing flip flops and pumice stone is not the most cushioning rock for when your foot accidentally brushes against it. We soaked up some sun. I accidentally fell asleep, so my front is much tanner than my back down, whoops.

After we got done at the beach a few of us went to Fira and we went to a fish spa. It was one of the most unique experiences I have ever had. These fish have no teeth, so they can't harm you, but they eat the dead skin cells off of your body. We had to scrub our legs and feet extremely well before we were allowed to dip them into the water. Once we got our feet in the water the fish went crazy. I don't really have ticklish feet, but when 30 or so fish started to essentially kiss my feet I couldn't help but laugh. The worst was when got in between your toes. If anyone ever comes here I would highly suggest this. It is great time, and once you get used to it, it becomes very therapeutic.

So that was my weekend in a nutshell. It was nice to get out and see our own island, so when we leave next weekend we actually can say that we have been all over our island first, before we decided to leave it.
