And So The Week Begins

Well today was our first Monday, and yes, they are just as bad as they are in America. We learned some more important phrases today for our Greek lesson. We also learned about the advanced civilization that used to inhabit the island of Santorini before the volcanic eruption (referred to as "The Big Boom" from fellow classmates). Did you know that there have been no found human remains found on the island? They probably took that increasing earthquakes as signs to leave. However, Crete did experience losses. There is evidence that they were even desperate enough to appease gods with human sacrifice. The Minoan civilization didn't really do sacrifices, but archeologists have uncovered a person tied up like a cow, with a vessel to collect blood, as well as two other figures, most likely priests. We were told this was an act of great stress. Also, did you know that the ancient inhabitants of Santorini had something akin to modern plumbing. They were able to pumped water into the city and wash away waste, as well as something like a shower. These great technologies show that great advanced nature of the civilization. The craziest thing is that this all occurred before before 1600 BCE. Isn't that insane? There have also been recollections of the smoke cloud in Chinese history, and we have core samples from Greece and evidence of tsunami in Israel. It was a pretty epic explosion.

Wow, long paragraph. But we learned some cool stuff this morning. After that we had class and we learned to mess with the shutter speed (see Day 6 Pictures). We talked about exposing for longer periods and also for shorter periods to catch really fast things, like water droplets. We spent some time practicing and then it was already time for lunch. After lunch it was our first class critique of our photos. It was a little nerve racking to have someone looking at your work, but it is always good to have other peoples' opinions on it.

After class was done a few of us went down to the beach to chill in the sun. But, being responsible students, we quizzed each other on our Greek vocabulary and daily lesson while in the sun. We were responsible Cobbers today. After doing that for about 30 minutes I fell asleep on the beach (apparently I even started snoring). Clearly, I enjoy the sun a little too much. We all decided we should get this quiz over with, so we made our way back to the hotel and swam until we were able to take the quiz.

Then came dinner time. After dinner a classmate and I went out to photograph for our class. We got some of the ocean, so that was sweet. I am so thankful I was able to get my parents' tripod here. It comes in handy so well when needing to gets those shots where the shutter is open for 2 seconds and stuff. We then moved down the boardwalk and then I shot some pictures with an extremely high shutter speed and ISO so I could catch some water droplets in motion.

After we came back from taking pictures we played a rousing game of Uno and then we split up to do our readings, blog, and whatnot. So I will be off to bed in a little bit. I hope you are all enjoying the adventure with me and I hope you are also enjoying all the pictures.
