Today we had our first day of classes. We started on the beach, yup, that's where we have our classes. We also move into a local restaurant when we need to project stuff or if it is raining (which it might tomorrow, so hopefully it doesn't rain). We had our first lesson in Greek language today. It was kind of hard since the ways we pronouns the Greek letters is actually different from the present-day language. In photography we talked about apertures and the rule of thirds. Our assignment for the day was to go out and take pictures while we play around with our aperture settings. So those will be the pictures from today (They will be posted later tonight).
We also went for a hike today. It didn't seem like the hike would be that bad, but the switchbacks were extremely deceiving. I don't know how long the hike was, but it felt like a good 2 mile (all uphill of course). We also ran into some goat sellers. We watched a person pick out a goat while our host explained that he was asking for one that wasn't too small since he was going to cook it. At the top of trail we could see down to the other side of the island. I'm sorry to say that there are no pictures from this excursion (we were warned that the climb was steep and we didn't want to risk tripping and falling on our cameras, but now that we climbed it, next time will will). We also ran into some side trails that seemed like the ancient pathway to Ancient Thera. These paths kind of ran into the new ones, but only at the top were they were guarded a rottweiler.
While also on the climb we went part ways up the side of the mountain that leads to a monastery. We saw the people who sold the goats herding them back up the mountain (we only realized they weren't wild after we saw about 6 of them and then the person herding them). We got to see a goat lean over the edge of a rock to eat some foliage, so it was about 10 feet above our heads. During working hours we can continue the pathway to Ancient Thera and go down the other side to another town for lunch or something and then you can take a ferry ride back.
We are getting ready to go out for dinner tonight. We wanted to go out for our first legitimate day in Santorini, but we also went grocery shopping today so we have plenty of food in our fridges. The fruit here is huge, a little bit more expensive that back home, but it is bigger. The local people mostly know English as well (it is a touristy spot). One interesting fact we learned today is that when you shake your head head back and forth it connotes that you are meaning yes and when you nod your head it means no. That will also be something that will take a little getting used too. We already had a few people in Athens ask for money and we shook our heads, but then they continue asking us, thinking that we would provide them with some money.
I am off for now. There will be pictures later, when I get a chance to get them onto my computer and sort through them.
